Nicotine Vaping Products

On 1 October 2021, the amendment to the Poisons Standard in relation to nicotine came into effect. The amendment means that consumers need a valid prescription to access nicotine vaping products lawfully.

QCPP has received queries seeking clarification about this change and whether pharmacies stocking and supplying nicotine vaping products will be assessed as being non-compliant with Requirement 4.2.4.

Stocking and supplying nicotine vaping products to consumers on receipt of a valid prescription will not make a pharmacy non-compliant with Requirement 4.2.4.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has published the following standard, guidance document and advertising permission on nicotine vaping products:

Further information on nicotine vaping products including the scheduling amendment, access pathways and requirements for dispensing can be found on the TGA website.

In addition to QC2020 requirements, pharmacies must also take their state and territory legislation into consideration when stocking and supplying nicotine vaping products.

The Quality Care 2020 Knowledge Hub has also been updated with two new entries under the Domain 4 FAQ for Stock Management to provide clarity on this requirement.
