Preparing for the revised QCPP Requirements

| Aug 24, 2017

Following the release of the QCPP Requirements 2017 (version 3.0), QCPP are working hard preparing to assess pharmacies against these requirements from early 2018. This includes a pilot assessment program which will be conducted in October 2017 where we will test assessment tools, revised QCPP Requirements, assessment techniques and interpretations which have been developed. These pilots play an important part in early identification and resolution of errors or issues with the approach to assessment before being rolled out to all pharmacies.

Prior to the outcomes of the pilot program being known, we have developed the following tips on transitioning to the revised requirements. These tips are relevant to all pharmacies, but may be of particular help for pharmacies due for assessment in early 2018.

Become familiar with the QCPP Requirements
When reading the QCPP Requirements 2017, focus on the intent of each requirement, and how it relates to business performance, safety and quality.

Apply relevant laws, guidelines and codes
As described in the ‘references within scope of requirement’ column accepted quality levels are described in relevant laws and guidelines. In particular, pharmacies should ensure their systems are consistent with:

  • PSA Professional Practice Standards;
  • State pharmacy authority guidelines; and,
  • Relevant Pharmacy Board Guidelines/Codes

Operations Manual: don’t start again!
If your pharmacy is accredited, QCPP has recognised you have a functional Operations Manual and quality management system. There is no requirement to restructure your Operations Manual to align to the remapped QCPP requirements. If your Operations Manual works for you, keep it in its current structure. If you want to change the way your Operations Manual, or intranet is structure, you can have confidence to do so.

Focus on helping your pharmacy run smoothly rather than ‘passing’ QCPP Assessment
When released, the updated QCPP Knowledge Hub will be useful to reflect on minimum requirements prior to assessment. When updating your policies and procedures, also think about whether they are meeting customer needs or business needs.
Do your procedures reflect what you do? If not, why not? Are they no longer relevant? Do all staff understand how to apply the procedure? Asking yourself questions like these can help identify ongoing business improvements – which is a key objective of the revised QCPP Requirements.

Look for quality and safety improvement advice from experts
Alerts and guidance from industry organisations, such as professional indemnity insurers, can help guide improvements to safety and quality in pharmacy practice.
