Triumph as Pharmacy of the Year 2003

Perth-based Friendlies Chemist has won the prestigious Pfizer Quality Care Pharmacy of the Year Award and a cash prize of $10 000 in recognition of the excellence in Quality Care implemented in their pharmacy.

Sponsored by Pfizer since its inception in 1999, the award recognises and rewards excellence within the Quality Care Pharmacy Program (QCPP).

John Chapman, CEO of the Australian Institute of Pharmacy Management and Graham Perl, Pfizer Manager of Professional Relations visited the six semi-finalists from as far west as Perth, as far north as Townsville and as far south as South Australia.

"All of the pharmacies that entered the award process demonstrated a drive for excellence in one or more areas of their practice. Choosing the short listed pharmacies and the eventual winners was an extraordinarily difficult task," said Mr Chapman.

Friendlies Chemists combined their 'conventional' pharmacy business with one that had practised for many years with the great majority of its business coming from naturopathy and homeopathy based practice.

Mr Chapman said that the judges recognised this as a significant achievement, noting that Friendlies Chemists "demonstrated the attention to detail and process that characterises entrants in tackling the very complex task of combining two separate pharmacy businesses."

He added: "Since the culture and tradition of these very dissimilar practice types are often diametrically opposed in their approach to the patient, their successful integration is a significant achievement."

QCPP is a Guild strategy to raise standards in community pharmacy including the management of scheduled 2 and 3 medicines. The higher the standards, the greater the barrier for any business other than pharmacy to gain distribution opportunity of scheduled medicines.

The Quality Care Pharmacy of the Year Award was initiated with the support of Pfizer to promote the uptake of the QCPP.

"Pfizer is to be congratulated on having the vision to recognise the importance of this award and its impact on Australian pharmacy and the commitment to continue their valuable support," said Mr Chapman.

The importance and support of the QCPP has led to Commonwealth recognition and funding of $10,000 for successful accreditation.

The winner of the Pfizer Quality Care Pharmacy of the Year Award was announced at the Australian Pharmacy Professional 2002 Conference's Gala Conference Dinner on Saturday 23 March.
